Foliage: Green, turning to orange in fall.

Elevation (if known): 7,000' to 10,000'

Water: Simulate mountain conditions with moisture retentive mulch. Water around the entire drip line as these trees have shallow roots. High water needs.

Soil : Well drained, tolerates slight alkalinity

Comments: Aspens will sucker out to form colonies. Consider planting location. Make sure tree receives water all around, otherwise may blow over.

Warnings: Aspens are notorious for suckering. Female trees produce vast amounts of cottony seed; nurseries only sell males. Trees tend develop shallow roots, and tend to develop more diseases than their cottonwood relatives. May be short lived.

Known Locations: Quiet a few around Alamosa, but not many good specimens.
