Aspen, Quaking Populus tremuloides Category: deciduous tree Size: medium Mature Size: 20 - 50' by 20 - 30' Zone: To 2 Growth Rate: fast Foliage: Green, turning to orange in fall. Elevation (if known): 7,000' to 10,000' Water: Simulate mountain conditions with moisture retentive mulch. Water around the entire drip line as these trees have shallow roots. High water needs. Soil : Well drained, tolerates slight alkalinity Sun: Comments: Aspens will sucker out to form colonies. Consider planting location. Make sure tree receives water all around, otherwise may blow over. Warnings: Aspens are notorious for suckering. Female trees produce vast amounts of cottony seed; nurseries only sell males. Trees tend develop shallow roots, and tend to develop more diseases than their cottonwood relatives. May be short lived.
