Water: Best to plant in a water basin for infrequent, deep watering. Mulch basin with pine needles, wood chips, or other organic matter. May do best planted on berms or raised island beds with good drainage.

Soil : Well-drained soil is preferred.

Sun: Plant in full sun. Perfers south-facing slopes.

Comments: While one of the most drought tolerate trees, extreme drought has stressed pinon forests recently. In the last few years of drought in the southwest, many pinons have died due bark-beetle disease. Apply good quality beetle treatment.
