Soil : Will grow in clay and sandy soils and tolerates poor soil better than spruces or firs. It tolerates alkaline conditions.

Sun: Best to transplant in spring to early summer. Avoid late fall planting. Full sun is best.

Comments: Very hardy. Prune in mid-to late spring to maintain height and spread. Beautiful fluffy trees. Withstands dry, windy conditions better than white pine. Once established, can endure drought conditions.

Warnings: Avoid overwatering and over fertilizing. Winter browning -- avoid planting in unprotected, full sun locations.
