Maple, Norway Acer platanoides "Crimson King" Category: deciduous tree Size: medium Mature Size: 35' - 40' x 25-35' Zone: 3-7 Growth Rate: fast Foliage: Elevation (if known): Water: Moderate drought tolerance. Soil : Adapts to a wide variety of soils including alkaline, sand, clay and acid soils. Sun: Full to part shade. Comments: Dense shade when mature. Well adapted to street planting if planted at least 5 feet from walkway. Easily transplanted. Warnings: Crimson King trunks can crack from sunscald on the southern side during the winter in zone 4 causing some trunk decay, but the tree usually remains intact. Dense shade and shallow root system competes with lawn grasses, and the shallow roots can make mowing under the tree difficult. The shallow roots can heave sidewalks so be certain to locate the tree 4 to 6 feet away.
