Fir, White Abies concolor Category: evergreen tree Size: large Mature Size: 40 - 50 ' x 12 - 17' Zone: To 3 Growth Rate: moderate Foliage: 1-2", soft bluish-green needles Elevation (if known): 4,000' to 10,000' Water: Prefers moist conditions, but adaptable to a bit less moisture Soil : Moist, rich, well-drained. Avoid clay, compacted or highly acidic soils. Sun: Prefers full sun, but will tolerate some shade. Comments: Noted for tolerance of hot and dry conditions among firs. Cones purplish, 3-6 inches long, upright Warnings: Can't tolerate hot sun, windy conditions, or drought when young. Best where protected from wind. May have spruce budworm, aphid damage on new growth.
